Accommodations

Please fill out our Availability Request Form if you are interested in staying with us.

We build our living structures using contemporary and traditional natural building methods and locally sourced materials. We construct with bamboo, cob, wattle and daub, light clay, natural plasters and wood and stone sourced from the area's surrounding forests and rivers and design/build all of our own edifices.  We have various options to choose from and will do our utmost to match you with the alternative that best meets your desires, budget and needs.

Our lodging rates include all meals. We are currently serving two large meals a day, brunch at 10 am and dinner at 6:30 pm. Bananas and other fruit are usually available at all times of the day. There is also a local restaurant across the street from the Ranch. Meals at the Ranch are cooked from scratch, delicious, and plentiful with the majority of ingredients coming from the Ranch and a variety of local farms.  Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements prior to arriving.  For more information about ethics surrounding food and our kitchen, see our Food Systems page.

Guests get a 15% discount for stays longer than 6 nights and a 35% discount for stays 1 month or longer. The price for children over 3 and up to 12 years is $35 per night with all meals included.  Costa Rican Nationals get a 15% discount on all prices.

We have a minimum 3-night stay requirement.

In early 2008, we began construction on a structure called Starboard Cork, named after a song written by Deivis Garcia and commonly performed by Alan Smith and his band The Porchistas. The timber frame and wattle and daub house, designed by Tyler See, Geoff Kinder and Alan Smith, and constructed with the hands of many is a fabulous place to live and stay.  It boasts two beautiful bedrooms, a spectacular common space with a couch that can be used as a single bed, and wonderful earthen plasters and floors. It is accompanied by a lovely timber frame composting toilet/shower structure and has some of the best views imaginable. This house can sleep up to 5 people.

This beautiful all wooden timber frame house has two bedrooms, each with a double bed, and a porch area with a day bed. The house can sleep up to 5 people. It has its own composting toilet and a stunning tadelakt shower. The space is extremely private and looks out towards the forest and is surrounded by one of the Ranch’s agroforestry spaces. The porch offers a great place to hang out with a book or for quiet time. This is a great couple or family cabin.

the goat barn

$60 per night per person for private room with shared bathroom including all meals
$110 per night per couple for private room with shared bathroom including all meals

Our 2017 year-long apprentices took on as their primary natural building project renovating our old goat barn into a beautiful cabin.  Features include a beautiful earthen sculpture, poor man's tadelakt interior walls, water and electricity, and a wonderful patio looking into the Banana Bowl, one of our primary orchard spaces.

The main room of the Goat Barn can be configured with a king bed or 2 single beds. There is also a daybed on the porch. This structure does not have it’s own bathroom or shower. These facilities are shared.

Bernie's Bunkhouse

$60 per night per person in shared bunk room with shared bathroom including all meals

Bernie's Bunkhouse is a beautiful timber frame, wattle and daub, lime/clay plastered building that has 3 rooms, each with 2 sets of bunkbeds.  The building was designed by Ranch core team member Nic Donati and there were many hands that went into the making. This is an excellent example of the Ranch's naturally built infrastructures.  The bunkhouse is near the Ranch's classroom with views into one of our orchards.  The structure is serviced by a beautiful composting toilet and two spectacular earthen/tadelakt showers.  There is running water and electricity in each room.

The Main House

$55 per night per person for a bed in a bunkroom with shared bathroom including all meals
$60 per night per person for private room with shared bathroom including all meals
$90 per night per couple for private double with shared bathroom including all meals

The main house is set on the edge of our 235-acre private wildlife refuge and features close proximity to 7 kilometers of forest trails, abundant wildlife, waterfalls, rivers, swimming holes and beautiful forests that border the La Cangreja National Park. This is the heart of the Ranch. The house is less than a one minute walk to town and contains one bedroom with a double bed and the Ranch's administrative offices. The middle bedroom has custom built cedar shutters that fold to the outside and a ceiling fan. There is also a 6 bed bunk room. The bathroom is next door to the middle bedroom with a shower and toilet making this lodging option a good choice for those guests needing a nearby bathroom. The toilet feeds our biodigester. There are numerous hammocks on the porches in which to read a book or nap. The house is also home to the Ranch's library and is the principle hangout for our pets. The main house is generally the most active place at the Ranch, and where all meals are served, so please keep this in mind if you're interested in staying here. There can be a lot of action here at times. It also contains the kitchen's beautiful gardens, a nursery, an earthen oven, the Ranch kitchen and space to read, write and relax.

The Hooch

$55 per night per person for private or shared room with shared bathroom including all meals
$90 per night per couple for private or shared room with shared bathroom including all meals

This is one of Rancho Mastatal’s most interesting and in demand structures and is built almost entirely out of bamboo. It provides guests with an intimate experience with the nature that abounds around it.  This magnificent private building sits high amongst the trees with dramatic vistas out towards the forest.

The Hooch is outfitted with one double bed and two single beds on two floors and sleeps up to four people. It features a beautiful bamboo floor. Guests staying in the Hooch share two beautiful showers and an awesome composting toilet with with our apprentices in a nearby, separate structure. This option is appropriate for those guests looking for a unique experience and is not appropriate for people uncomfortable going up and down ladders or families with children under 6 years old.  Due to the nature of bamboo's flexibility, the Hooch does move a bit as you do.  The Hooch has perfect access to many of our trails, swimming holes, forests and waterfalls.
